Knowledge is power, information is knowledge, and data is information in digitized form. Hence, data is power. The process of gathering and analyzing accurate data from various sources to find answers to research problems, trends and probabilities, etc., to evaluate possible outcomes is known as Data Collection
ReplyDeleteQuestionaire can be prepared. The subjects can be asked to give feedback on a specific topic. Survey can be done.
ReplyDeleteTools are the things that we use in order to collect relevant data. E.g. Questionnaire, interview schedule
ReplyDeleteTechnique is the way we collect the data. E.g. open ended/ closed, face to face/ telephone
Analysis of data purely depends on whether one has collected quantitative data or qualitative data. If it is quantitative data, the best way to analyze is comparison of mean scores of Pre and post test. If the data is qualitative then content analysis is suitable.
There are various tools and techniques that can used to collect data for action research. The tools must be chosen carefully as the success or failure of the action research is based on the data. One or more of the following tools can be used to collect data:
ReplyDelete-Teacher prepared tests
-Observation - can be done by the teacher taking up the research if the student needs to be observed or by a colleague if the teacher himself/herself needs to be observed.
-Audio and video recording - this especially captures the facial expression of the students that can give some incite about the student's state of mind.
-Structured and semi-structured interviews - Though we can have structured questions to ask all children, sometimes with some children we can go in detail about the problem area question which becomes semi-structured. This again is a very effective tool as we can probe the students who need attention in detail.
Any material that is used in the classroom or during teaching becomes the tools for action research. The techniques include observations, questionnaire, interviews. The qualitative data can be analyzed using SPSS, AMOS, ANOVA
ReplyDeleteSurvey, Questionnaire, Structured/Semi-structured interviews, Video recording, Observation Schedule etc.

The choice of tools and techniques in action research should align with the research questions and the specific educational context. In the analysis of qualitative data, techniques like thematic analysis, content analysis, narrative analysis, and visual analysis provide rich insights into the complexities of educational practices. These qualitative approaches go beyond numerical metrics, allowing researchers to explore the meanings embedded in participants' experiences and perspectives. The iterative nature of action research also allows for ongoing refinement of data collection tools and techniques based on reflective insights gained throughout the research process.

ReplyDeleteIn the process of action research in education, tools and techniques for data collection refer to the methods and instruments used to gather relevant information and evidence to understand the problem being addressed, monitor progress, and evaluate outcomes. These tools and techniques are crucial for informing decision-making and guiding improvements in educational practices. Some common tools and techniques for data collection in action research in education include:
ReplyDelete1.Surveys and Questionnaires: These are structured instruments used to collect data from a large number of participants to gather information about their attitudes, opinions, experiences, and behaviors related to the research topic.
2.Interviews: Interviews involve direct conversations between the researcher and participants to gather in-depth qualitative data. They allow for probing and clarification, enabling a deeper understanding of participants' perspectives, experiences, and insights.
3.Observation: Observation involves systematically watching and recording behaviors, interactions, and events in educational settings. It provides rich qualitative data about classroom dynamics, teaching strategies, student engagement, and other aspects of the learning environment.
4.Document Analysis: Researchers may analyze various documents such as lesson plans, curriculum materials, student work samples, assessment results, and policy documents to understand existing practices, policies, and their impacts on educational outcomes.
5.Focus Groups: Focus groups involve facilitated discussions with a small group of participants who share common characteristics or experiences. They provide insights into shared beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions, allowing researchers to explore diverse viewpoints and uncover underlying issues.
6.Action Logs and Reflections: Researchers may ask participants to keep journals, logs, or reflective writings to document their experiences, actions, challenges, and reflections throughout the research process. These self-reports can provide valuable insights into the implementation of interventions and their effects over time.
7.Quantitative Measures: Researchers may use standardized tests, assessments, or performance metrics to collect quantitative data on student learning outcomes, academic achievement, behavior, or other relevant variables.
8.Mixed-Methods Approaches: Combining multiple data collection methods, such as surveys with interviews or observations with document analysis, allows researchers to triangulate findings, validate interpretations, and gain a more comprehensive understanding of the research problem.
Overall, the selection of appropriate tools and techniques for data collection in action research depends on the research questions, goals, context, and the preferences of the researcher and participants. Effective data collection methods are essential for generating evidence to inform meaningful educational improvements and promote positive change.

ReplyDeleteData collection is the heart of action research. Depending on which kind of data needs to be collected, there are different tools.
ReplyDeleteFor qualitative data, there is an option of conducting an interview, observing the class, video or audio recording and checking the work of the student. While collecting this data care should be taken to note only those aspects which are pertaining to the objective of the action research.
For quantitative data, there are many standardised tools. The most preferred method is teacher given tests (pre-test and post-test) since it deals with a felt need of the teacher in a certain class.
The data from this is subject to statistical analysis. This involved, graphing, finding mean and standard deviation.
To examine how the teachers implement the new strategy ,how is the student response , how it improve test scores, whether the strategy is effective or not, questionnaires be prepared, pre test and post test be performed and and conclusion to be derived.
ReplyDeleteAt first one has to identify the problem, this will be followed by data collection and tools to be used. A survey has to be conducted and finally a report has to be written which can help others to bring about a desired change.

There are many ways like surveys, questionnaires, interviews, data analysis etc.
ReplyDeleteLog or Research Journal
ReplyDeleteA research journal is a notebook used to record thoughts and observations related to all parts of your research. It is an important source of information to use when trying to piece together the chronology of your research project. You may choose to include a variety of data, such as observations, analyses, diagrams, sketches, quotes, student comments, scores, thoughts, or even feelings and impressions.
Field Notes—Your Observations
Field notes are the written observations of what you see taking place in your classroom. Beginning action researchers are often unsure of what they should record.
Checklists
Checklists come in many forms. A checklist is a list that specifies certain attributes, such as behaviors, traits, assignments, or skills. When that attribute is seen, some method is used to either check it off or indicate the number of times it was present.
Rubrics
A rubric describes specific traits you are looking for in a student product or performance (like the checklists above). The purpose of a rubric is to provide consistency and accuracy of scoring. However, they are very time intensive in their construction and use.
Conferences and Interviews
There is an important difference between conferences and interviews. In a conference one or more students talk about their work or some aspect of classroom functioning.
Video and Audio Recordings
Video recordings (videotape and digital) provide you with information related to students’ nonverbal behaviours, their location or movement throughout a lesson, and a general overview of your performance or pedagogical techniques.
Maps
Maps are a form of DRC that can be used to record where things occur in physical space or students’ path as they move about the classroom, school, or playground. To do this create a simple map of that physical space. Record where behaviours occur by putting an ‘X’ in those observed spots. Record the paths students use by creating lines on that map. Artifacts: Students’ Products or Performances.
The Arts
The arts are another way of seeing the world and can be used to bring a different level of understanding to your action research. Elliot Eisner (1998) suggests that literature and poetry be used as a research device to capture and illuminate some portion of reality.
Archival Data
Archival data include such things as past grades, test scores, cumulative folders, health records, parental occupation, disciplinary actions, or attendance records.
Surveys
Surveys allow you to get a variety of information quickly. They can be designed using both closed-response or open-ended questions.
Attitude and Rating Scales
Attitude and rating scales provide respondents with a question or statement for which they are asked to select one of several answers that determine the strength of their response.
